1 - BROWN, RUTH - BLACK IS BROWN AND BROWN IS BEAUTIF - (CD)
VAMPISOUL

RUTH "Miss Rhythm" BROWN was the hit-making queen from 1949 to the end of the 50's to a point that ATLANTIC RECORDS was once called "the house that Ruth built". She has a worlwide reputation as R&B pioneer inspired by jazz legends Sarah Vaughan, Billie Holiday and Dinah Washington, Brown's seductive vocal delivery delighted millions on legendary chart-toppers such as "Teardrops in My Eyes", "So Long", "Mambo Baby" and many others. On the aptly titled "Black is Brown and Brown is Beautiful", originally released in 1969, the material is closer to soul than to jazz, and it is full of joy and, of course, rhythm.

2 - BROWN, RUTH - LATE DATE WITH ... - (CD)
HALLMARK

Long before there was the Queen of Soul (Aretha Franklin), there was the Queen of R&B - Ruth Brown. It wasRuth Browns success that enabled Atlantic Records to grow from being a minor independent to a major powerhousein the American record industry. After first registering on the R&B chart in 1950, she registered an array ofhits over the next decade, with several also crossing over to the pop chart.Late Date was her second album for Atlantic. The first, issued in 1957 was merely a compilation of tracks recordedover the previous eight years. Late Date was specifically recorded for album release but found Ruth forsakingher traditional R&B base for an album of standards! It was a risky strategy but one which worked to perfection -today Late Date is regarded as one of her better albums.

3 - BROWN, RUTH - LATE DATE WITH RUTH BROWN - (LP)
CORNBREAD

Probably the best and most popular female artist of the 1950s jump blues and R&B scene, Ruth Brown was a powerhouse vocalist, and Late Date With Ruth Brown is a perfect example of her husky, smokey, raunchy presence. Before Aretha and Wilson, even before Ray, Ruth Brown was the R&B star of Atlantic Records (there's a reason Atlantic was often referred to as "the house that Ruth built", a nod to another NYC institution, Yankee Stadium). Essential 1950s R&B from a absolute legend, reissued on 180 gram vinyl with download code.
